Recover from external drive failure
External drives are fast, simple, and useful. They also fail, get unplugged, fill up, and sometimes disappear. A good Azivault setup treats the drive as one recovery path, not the whole plan.
The moment this usually goes wrong
The drive mounted yesterday. Today it clicks, disconnects, asks to be initialized, or appears empty. The Mac is fine, but the backup destination is not.
A failed backup drive is not a restore problem if there is another readable repository. It becomes a crisis only when the failed disk was the only copy of the backup.
Use the external drive for fast restore
External storage is a good first Azivault destination because it is easy to understand and usually fast to restore from.
Create the plan, run the first backup while the drive is connected, then restore a small file to prove the repository can be read.
Do not make one disk the whole strategy
A single external drive does not protect against drive failure or a problem that affects the Mac and the drive together.
For important folders, add a second Azivault destination or pair the local drive with S3-compatible offsite storage.

- Keep at least one repository copy away from the Mac for irreplaceable data.
Watch for operational failures
Scheduled backups only help when the destination is available. If the external drive is usually disconnected, run the backup manually before major changes or use a destination that is available more often.
- Keep the drive connected long enough for scheduled runs.
- Avoid using the source folder as the repository destination.
- Replace drives that disconnect unexpectedly or report filesystem errors.
Know the warning signs
External drive failure is not always dramatic. A plan that repeatedly cannot find its destination, a disk that mounts read-only, unexplained disconnects, or slow directory listings can all be early signs.
Do not keep pushing new backups onto a destination you no longer trust. Create a new repository on a healthy drive or add an S3-compatible destination, then run a fresh completed backup.
Replace the destination before cleanup
If the old drive is still partly readable, resist the urge to reorganize it first. Copy or recreate the backup on a known-good destination before deleting anything.
For Azivault, the cleanest long-term answer is usually a new plan or reconnected destination that completes a current run and passes a restore test.
Restore before replacing files
When a drive failure happens, restore from the latest completed run to a separate folder. Check the contents before overwriting current files.
Azivault exposes completed runs through Finder, so the restore step can be a normal file-copy workflow after the repository is unlocked.
Add offsite storage for the files that matter
The external drive is the fast path. Offsite storage is the survival path. Use S3-compatible storage for folders where losing both the Mac and the local backup would be unacceptable.
Because Azivault encrypts the repository before writing to storage, the offsite destination does not need to be trusted with plaintext file contents or filenames.
