When an Arq alternative makes sense

You do not want to choose a storage provider

Backblaze Computer Backup bundles the client and hosted storage. That reduces provider configuration, billing variables, and bucket policy work, but also replaces Arq’s portable bring-your-own-storage model with a managed service recovery workflow.

You want open-source infrastructure

restic is the stronger fit for command-line automation and infrastructure-managed repositories. Duplicati provides a web UI and broad destinations. Both place more responsibility on you for scheduling, monitoring, credentials, upgrades, and recovery drills.

You mainly need local Mac copies

Carbon Copy Cloner is more direct when the destination is an attached disk or network target and the key requirements are readable copies, snapshots, and detailed Mac task control rather than cloud-provider breadth.

You want a simpler native restore surface

Azivault exposes completed backup runs through a read-only Finder File Provider domain and treats the azi CLI as a recovery surface. The trade is substantial: it is younger, Mac-only, supports far fewer destinations, and does not yet match Arq’s retention maturity or immutable backup records.

You need ransomware-oriented object lock

Arq may remain the best fit. Its current documentation supports immutable backup records with compatible AWS S3, S3-compatible, Backblaze B2, MinIO, Wasabi, and Google Cloud Storage configurations. Azivault does not currently offer provider-level immutability.

Bottom line

Do not leave Arq merely because another app has a shorter feature list or a calmer interface. Stay when its maturity, destinations, retention, Windows support, and immutability solve your actual requirements.
